Dr Lucy Agyepong, one of the consultants for the Sci-Tech Innovation Challenge, also shared her expectations ahead of the event. She noted that participants are expected to build and innovate with a clear sense of purpose. According to her, consultants are interested in both the technical capabilities of the students and how these skills can be applied to solve real-world problems, particularly within Ghanaian society.

She further encouraged students to embrace learning and active inquiry, emphasising that through this process, they will acquire the essential knowledge needed to make a greater impact.

The first episode of the Mentorship Sessions, hosted by Ms Lucy Akosua Fiadonu, immediately followed the opening speeches. Emmanuel Afetorgbor, Global Head of Operations at Trustur AI and mentor for the session, emphasised that mastering STEM requires a practical, hands-on approach and strongly encouraged students to pursue extra classes to gain experience in solving real-world challenges.

You will need to go beyond the normal academic work by joining other groups or clubs to gain hands-on coding experience. You must put in the effort to acquire the experience and training,” he said.

Drawing from his own journey, he shared that his early foundation in STEM began with his science education at Keta SHS, which led him to study Computer Science at the University of Ghana. He also detailed the developmental challenges faced by Trustur AI in building their software. He concluded by motivating the students to cultivate self-motivation and resilience to overcome the inevitable roadblocks encountered while innovating.

“We faced challenges in the beginning but kept moving regardless. To the young people: do not give up when you encounter obstacles. When you set your mind on something, it is possible to achieve it,” he encouraged.
