The final episode of the 2025 Mentorship Sessions featured Dr Nana Aba Kwenua Pobee, a medical doctor who values both clinical and non-clinical approaches to healthcare. She is an advocate for holistic well-being, championing practices that support good health for people of all ages.

Her degree in Medicine and Surgery is complemented by professional certifications in leadership, policy, advocacy, health administration, business administration, and project management. She is currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree in Health Law and Ethics. Dr Pobee is also the founder of NkwaPa, an organisation committed to improving well-being through inclusive health education, accessible preventive outreaches, and people-centred advocacy that prioritises marginalised and underserved communities.
Her session began with a direct clarification: “not all doctors are men; women can be doctors too.” Responding to students’ questions, she used the opportunity to stress that medicine is a field open to everyone, regardless of gender.

She recounted her six-year journey studying medicine in China, describing the experience as “eye-opening.” Her time there, she explained, broadened her outlook and exposed her to how science, technology and engineering are applied within the healthcare sector in China.
Although she is not currently practising as a doctor in a hospital, she emphasised that she applies her medical training through public health initiatives that serve the community. Her organisation, NkwaPa, focuses on delivering health education in Ghanaian communities using both local Ghanaian languages and sign language. According to her, this approach ensures that people fully understand the information being shared.
“We are doing that in our local languages because we want to bring health to the people,” she said.

Dr Pobee also shared her personal study technique, which involves understanding the subject matter, breaking it down and paying close attention to every concept. She encouraged students to explore and adopt study methods that work best for them.
She further confessed that there were times when studying felt immensely difficult, leading to moments of self-doubt. During these periods, she had to rely heavily on self-motivation to persevere.

She concluded the session by encouraging the students, assuring them that their aspirations are attainable, especially when they are supported by a strong and reliable system during challenging moments.
