NSMQ 2025: Mfantsipim School Makes History with Back-to-Back Victory in Fierce All-Boys Derby

The Grand Finale of the 2025 National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ) lived up to its billing as a thrilling “championship of champions’’, featuring three academic powerhouses; Mfantsipim School, St. Augustine’s College, and Opoku Ware School, in an all-boys showdown for the coveted national trophy.
At the end of a nerve-racking contest, Mfantsipim School emerged victorious, amassing 56 points to clinch the title and successfully defend their championship crown, making it a back-to-back win.

The Grand Finale began in electrifying fashion, with the auditorium echoing to the deafening jama chants and school anthems of all three finalists. The Quiz Mistress, Professor Elsie Effah Kaufman, described the contest as “the championship of champions’’.
Before the competition commenced, she invited the schools to share their fondest NSMQ memories. Mfantsipim School highlighted their Quarter-final contest as the most memorable, while St. Augustine’s College and Opoku Ware School both mentioned their Semi-final experiences.

The first round began on an intense note as each school sought to establish an early advantage. Mfantsipim School took the lead with 20 points, followed closely by St. Augustine’s College and Opoku Ware School, both on 17 points. The round was fiercely contested, with few bonus points left unclaimed.
In Round Two, the Trustur AI Speed Race raised the tempo as contestants answered questions at lightning speed. Each correct response drew cheers, while missed attempts prompted gasps of “Eii!” from the audience. St. Augustine’s College overtook Mfantsipim School, adding 10 points to reach 27 points, while Mfantsipim School trailed slightly with 24 points. Opoku Ware School remained at 17 points.
Mfantsipim School made a substitution, introducing Mohammed for Ahmed, in Round Three: Prudential Life Insurance NSMQ Star (Problem of the Day) ahead of the Biology Problem, a question on paternity testing using DNA samples. All three schools correctly identified Man B as the father, but Mfantsipim School’s impressive explanation earned them six points, bringing their total to 30 points. St. Augustine’s College and Opoku Ware School both secured two points each, moving to 29 and 19 points, respectively.
In Round Four, Jupay Money Transfer True or False, St. Augustine’s College substituted Harold for Daniel at the start of the round. Mfantsipim School, however, maintained composure and achieved a clean sheet, adding 16 points to reach 46 points. St. Augustine’s College added 13 points to make 42 points, while Opoku Ware School gained 10 points, bringing their total to 29 points.

The final round, GOIL Riddle Bonanza sealed the fate of the contest. Mfantsipim School solved the first riddle on the second clue and later answered the third and final riddle correctly, securing their victory with 56 points. St. Augustine’s College and Opoku Ware School ended with 42 and 29 points, respectively.
As Professor Kaufmann announced the results, the entire hall erupted into jubilation, with the Mfantsipim supporters chanting in unison: “God is a MOBA!”
Mfantsipim School took home an impressive array of awards, marking their triumph as back-to-back champions of the National Science & Maths Quiz. The School received GH₵30,000 and medals from the Ghana Education Service (GES), alongside a GH₵40,000 special award for excellence from GOIL PLC. They also earned GH₵3,200 for answering three riddles, GH₵10,000 as the Pepsodent Highest Scorer, and an additional GH₵4,480 from the Momo Money Zone. Their awards also included the GOIL Super Bonanza Award and an all-expenses-paid trip to Dubai, for three contestants and one teacher, sponsored by Adansi Travels and Rwanda Air.

St. Augustine’s College, the first runners-up, also earned GH₵20,000 and medals from GES, as well as ₵15,000 each for the contestants and their teachers. They received GH₵1,500 for achieving three perfect scores between the one-eighth and semi-final stages as the NSMQ True Star Award from Prudential Life Insurance, in addition to GH₵3,360 from the Momo Money Zone.

Opoku Ware School placed third and was awarded GH₵15,000 from GES, GH₵10,000 each to the contestants and teachers from GOIL PLC, and GH₵2,320 from the Momo Money Zone.
All contestants from the three finalist schools, were additionally presented with laptops and GH₵2,500 worth of Coronation Insurance coverage for six months.
Other special awards went to Amaniampong SHS and Mankranso SHS, who received GH₵7,000 each, for the Most Impressive Run Award. Stephen Apemah Baah of Opoku Ware School was honoured with GH₵5,000 and a plaque for his third consecutive NSMQ appearance, while Nana Benyi received GH₵2,000 for making two appearances. The Professor Henrietta Award for Outstanding Female Contestant, worth GH₵5,000, went to Aburi Girls' SHS.
With this triumph, Mfantsipim School cements its place in NSMQ history as the back-to-back champions, reaffirming their dominance and setting a new benchmark for academic excellence in the country’s most prestigious quiz competition.
