The second episode of the 2025 Mentorship Sessions, held at West Africa Senior High School, focused on “Exploring the World of STEM Beyond the Classroom.” The session featured Jeremy Acquaah, the mentor for the episode, who serves as Lead Consultant at STEMpowered Inc., where he supports schools, communities, and youth-focused organisations. He shared his inspiring journey and emphasised the vast opportunities available to young people actively engaged in STEM.

Mr Acquaah began by recounting his personal journey in science. As a student, he successfully balanced his academic work with active participation in STEM-related activities, notably representing his school in regional competitions, that significantly enhanced his knowledge. This strong foundation, inspired him to pursue Computer Science at the tertiary level.

His career evolved from these early achievements, eventually leading him to become a lead consultant who supports organisations in adopting and implementing STEM strategies. Throughout his professional journey, he has mentored numerous young people, consistently inspiring them to strive for excellence.

Mr Acquaah highlighted several lucrative career opportunities available to students who pursue STEM-related courses, including software engineering, artificial intelligence consultancy, cybersecurity, civil engineering, and others.

He strongly encouraged students to take up volunteering opportunities, explaining that such experiences open them up to a wide range of prospects and provide invaluable real-world exposure.

One thing you should appreciate and take advantage of as young people is volunteering,” he said.

According to Jeremy, innovation inevitably comes with challenges, and his own journey to becoming a consultant was no exception. He shared that he found strength in continuously motivating himself to keep moving forward.

He urged students to adopt the same spirit of self-motivation to sustain their efforts and to actively seek inspiration.

Let your goals motivate you. Read about what other people are doing and let that inspire you,” he advised.

A key piece of advice Mr Acquaah shared was for students to avoid limiting their learning to the classroom environment. He emphasised that restricting oneself to the classroom is one of the greatest disservices a person can do to their own growth. Instead, he encouraged students to view the classroom as a foundation for greater achievements.

The greatest disservice you can do to yourself is to limit yourself to the classroom. Do not let it be your boundary; let it be a stepping stone to bigger things you want to achieve,” he said.

He concluded by assuring students that meaningful change happens gradually through consistent effort.
