Daniel Kekeli Gakpetor was the second guest on the NSMQ Live Chat on March 27, 2025. He was a participant in the 2020 edition of the National Science & Maths Quiz, where he represented Presbyterian Boys' Secondary School (PRESEC, Legon) alongside his teammates  – Benjamin Quansah Nketsiah and Isaac Kofi Gyamfi. Together, they faced Adisadel College and Opoku Ware School in the Grand Finale, where they emerged victorious.

During his interview, Daniel reminisced about his favourite moments on the show, particularly when his teammate, Benjamin, impressed him with a swift answer to a question moments after it was read by the Quiz Mistress, Prof. Elsie Effah Kaufmann.

As soon as the Quiz Mistress read the question, Benjamin pressed the bell and gave out the answer. This action of his impressed me so much that I almost wanted to hug him immediately. He was a good partner to compete with,” Daniel fondly recounted.

Daniel also spoke about the strong connection he had with his teammates, describing it as almost telepathic when they were on stage. He noted that working as a team for two years prior to the competition contributed significantly to their success. He recalled being unwell during the competition and unable to perform at his best, but his confidence in his teammates reassured him that they would excel regardless.

Speaking about their semi-final contest where PRESEC faced Aburi Presby SHTS and Kumasi Academy, Daniel said it was his favourite contest because he and his teammates brought their A-game and demonstrated their academic prowess.

Reflecting on the impact of the NSMQ on his life, Daniel mentioned the opportunity to make new friends and build a community of like-minded individuals. He shared how participating in the NSMQ helped him to overcome shyness and build his self-confidence.

One of the most underrated benefits of the NSMQ is how it helps you build self-confidence and overcome shyness. As an introvert, participating in the NSMQ has helped me improve my self-esteem. I have formed long-lasting relationships with my friends through the NSMQ. The NSMQ has also opened scholarship opportunities for many people and for that, I will forever hold the programme in high esteem,” he added.

In his final remarks, Daniel revealed his intention to use the knowledge he is acquiring in Computer Engineering to contribute to Ghana’s development.

He advised his colleagues not to tie their academic worth to the NSMQ, especially those who may not win. He encouraged them to build a strong support system and prioritise their mental health.
