Since the introduction of the Regional Championship in 2019, only one school has been unable to achieve the extraordinary feat of dominating their regions and conquering the national stage in the same year, emerging as both Regional and National Champions.

Out of seven possible opportunities between 2019 and 2025, three schools have accomplished this feat across five editions, all occurring consecutively from 2019 to 2023. The first to set this standard was St. Augustine’s College in 2019, marking the beginning of what has become one of the most coveted achievements in the National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ).

In 2020, Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, Legon (PRESEC), followed with an equally outstanding performance. Prempeh College then joined the elite group in 2021 with a commanding run. PRESEC went on to reclaim the title in 2022, becoming the first school to achieve double champion status twice. They repeated this remarkable feat again in 2023, solidifying their dominance in the competition.

In recognition of this exceptional achievement, GOIL PLC, introduced the GOIL Double Champion Award in 2023. The award grants a cash prize of GH₵2,000 to any reigning regional or zonal champion who proceeds to win the National Championship. PRESEC was the first recipient of this award in 2023, and it has remained unclaimed since.

Despite their recent national success, Mfantsipim School, champions in 2024 and 2025, are yet to achieve double champion status. Their closest attempt came in 2021 when they won the Central Regional title but were eliminated at the One-eighth Stage of the National Championship. With their current form, the question remains whether they can secure a historic third consecutive national title and also become double champions.
As the NSMQ continues to evolve, one thing remains certain: somewhere across the regions, a new contender is emerging, ready to rise to the challenge and claim the ultimate honour of becoming the next double champion.
