The Preliminary Stage of the 2026 National Science & Maths Quiz (NSMQ) National Championship began with a contest featuring: St. Hubert Seminary SHS, Akwamuman SHS and Bright SHS. Moderating the contest at the SMS Auditorium was Dr Thelma Ohene-Agyei, who interacted with the participants to keep them at ease. At the end of the contest, St. Hubert Min. Sem. SHS, booked a seat at the One-eighth Stage with 51 points.

St. Hubert Sem. SHS, who lost to Adisadel College at the Preliminary Stage last year, were determined to go further in this year’s competition. Bright SHS, a private school, were equally optimistic about their chances of winning the contest and advancing to the One-eighth Stage. For Akwamuman SHS, who missed out on last year’s National Championship, returning to the competition was a welcome opportunity.

“The journey has been difficult, but we prevailed. We are happy to be back,” Faris Selikem Quartey said.

At the end of Round One, Bright SHS led with 19 points, followed closely by St. Hubert Sem. SHS with 18 points and Akwamuman SHS with 15 points.

The Truster AI Speed Race (Round Two) took a surprising turn as St. Hubert Sem. SHS dominated the round, answering most of the questions to surge to 33 points. Bright SHS, who led after Round One, failed to add to their tally and remained on 19 points, while Akwamuman SHS added two points to move to 17 points.

The Prudential Life Insurance (Problem of the Day) Round, featured a trigonometric mathematics problem. St. Hubert Sem. SHS arrived at the correct solution but lost two marks for failing to provide the required units and final answer, earning eight out of the 10 points. Bright SHS earned seven points, while Akwamuman SHS scored two points.

The Jupay Money Transfer True/False Round saw all three schools pick up points as they took turns answering questions correctly. St. Hubert Sem. SHS, however, extended their lead to 48 points, while Bright SHS moved to 39 points and Akwamuman SHS to 29 points.

In the GOIL Riddle Bonanza Round, St. Hubert Min. Sem. SHS cemented their victory by answering one riddle correctly to secure 51 points. Bright SHS answered three riddles correctly, winning the GOIL Riddle Bonanza prize of GH₵800 and a score of 48 points. Akwamuman SHS failed to answer any and exited the competition with 29 points.
